The Problem

An independent music platform needed a marketplace where artists could sell albums, music videos, and audio tracks directly to fans — bypassing the gatekeepers of traditional distribution. Existing solutions forced creators into platform-dependent ecosystems with opaque revenue splits, limited analytics, and no real ownership of the customer relationship. They needed a full-stack platform that gave artists control: a web admin panel for managing content, pricing, and promotions, paired with a mobile app delivering seamless playback, offline downloads, and personalized recommendations. The platform had to make buying music as frictionless as streaming it — while ensuring creators captured the revenue.

Why Building an Artist Content Marketplace Is Hard

A direct-to-fan music marketplace combines the complexity of e-commerce, media streaming, mobile app development, and creator tools — each with its own engineering depth:

  • Media playback across web and mobile must be seamless — audio tracks and music videos need gapless album playback, adaptive streaming quality, and background audio on mobile. Any interruption breaks the listening experience and kills conversion
  • Offline downloads change the architecture — the platform must handle DRM-aware file delivery, local storage management, license verification, and graceful syncing when connectivity returns
  • E-commerce with digital goods has unique challenges — digital content requires instant delivery, download link management, access control, and prevention of unauthorized redistribution, all while keeping the purchase flow as simple as one tap
  • Creator analytics must be real-time and actionable — artists need to see sales, plays, revenue, and engagement as it happens to drive pricing decisions, promotion timing, and content strategy
  • Personalized recommendations from listening history — surfacing relevant content requires tracking listening patterns, purchase history, and engagement signals across a growing catalog
  • Social sharing must drive viral discovery — built-in tools that make sharing music to Instagram, Twitter, and other platforms effortless turn every fan into a distribution channel

What We Did

1

Architecture & E-Commerce Foundation

  • Designed the full-stack architecture with WooCommerce as the e-commerce engine — product catalog, inventory management, pricing tiers, promotions, and order processing for digital content
  • Integrated Stripe for secure payment processing — one-tap purchases, saved payment methods, creator payouts, and detailed transaction analytics
  • Deployed on AWS with CDN-backed media delivery for fast, reliable content streaming and download distribution worldwide
2

Creator Admin Panel & Content Management

  • Built the web-based admin panel where artists upload albums, music videos, and audio tracks — with metadata management, pricing controls, promotional tools, and release scheduling
  • Developed the inventory and catalog system — artists organize content into albums, singles, and video collections with customizable pricing tiers and bundle options
  • Implemented the sales analytics dashboard — real-time revenue tracking, play counts, download metrics, fan demographics, and conversion analytics
3

Mobile App & Media Playback

  • Built the React Native mobile app with seamless media playback — audio streaming with background play, gapless album transitions, and adaptive video streaming for music videos
  • Implemented offline downloads — fans purchase and download content for offline listening with local library management, storage controls, and automatic sync when reconnected
  • Developed the personalized recommendation engine — analyzing listening history, purchase patterns, and engagement signals to surface relevant artists and content
4

Social Sharing & Community

  • Built social sharing integration — one-tap sharing of tracks, albums, and videos to Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and messaging platforms with rich preview cards
  • Integrated Firebase for real-time notifications — purchase confirmations, new release alerts from followed artists, and engagement triggers
  • Developed community features — artist following, fan activity feeds, and social proof elements (trending tracks, popular albums) that create discovery loops

What We Learned

Frictionless purchase flow is the single biggest lever for creator revenue

Every additional step between "I love this track" and "I own this track" costs conversions. We optimized the purchase flow to a single tap for returning users (saved Stripe methods), with instant delivery and immediate playback. Pre-authorizing payment methods and delivering content optimistically (confirming the transaction asynchronously) cut perceived purchase time to under one second. For digital content, speed of delivery is the product.

Offline downloads are a trust and storage management problem, not just a download button

Fans expect downloaded content to just work offline — no license popups, no re-authentication, no mysterious disappearances. We built the offline system with pre-validated access tokens that work without connectivity, local storage budgeting that warns before filling the device, and background sync that quietly reconciles the local library with server state on reconnect. The engineering was in making the offline experience feel invisible.

Social sharing drives more discovery than any recommendation algorithm

We built a personalized recommendation engine and it works well. But the data showed social shares — fans posting tracks to Instagram stories, sending albums in group chats — drove significantly more new-fan acquisition than algorithmic recommendations. We doubled down on sharing tools: rich preview cards with album art and playback snippets, one-tap flows, and post-purchase share prompts. The best distribution channel for music is the fan who just bought it.
